A Million Little Things Offers Up a Charming Gay Awakening

A truly sweet gay awakening came to light on ABC’s A Million Little Things “Crystal Clear” episode this season. Katherine, played by Grace Park, opens up to new love in more ways than one. Coming out of a divorce after a long marriage to an addict who cycled in and out of recovery, Katherine has been leaning into life without her husband.

There was an almost-romance with a male colleague in the wake of the separation, but Katherine didn’t quite feel right about it. She needed more time and couldn’t comfortably ease into the relationship. Pumping the breaks on getting involved post divorce is a totally legitimate move, but perhaps her instincts are calling her elsewhere?

“I just don’t want you to limit yourself…”

Shanice (Nikiva Dionne) is introduced to Katherine by a mutual friend. At first they’re just getting together for play dates with their similarly aged kids, but a friendship quickly grows. The friend crew insists on throwing Katherine a divorce party and Shanice is invited. A heart-to-heart conversation ensues over a sinkful of dirty dishes post party. Shanice shares with Katherine that she was in a relationship with a woman most recently. It’s not something she has been open about with anyone else.

Hesitancy lingers as Katherine processes how she feels about Shanice. This is uncharted territory for Katherine, who’s never kissed another woman before. Katherine is hung up on who she was, declaring, “Shanice, I was married to a man for 12 years.” Shanice perfectly responds, “I was married to one for 14. It doesn’t mean you can’t have feelings for me. I just don’t want you to limit yourself because you think it’s what you should do.”

First kiss dreams are made of this

What follows is the sweetest first kiss. A dignified and endearing entrance into lesbian love is heartening to see. Too often characters are thrown right into the bedroom instead of being offered a slow and steady stroll into intimacy. I’m so glad Katherine is given the time to appreciate the moment and milestone. Kudos to the writers for not going full throttle too soon– she has plenty of time to develop feelings. Let her (and us viewers) savor the story.

I’m hoping this isn’t the last we see of these two, but it’s safe to assume there will be other female love interests if not Shanice. Katherine changes her dating profile to include ‘interested in women,’ in a pivotal moment. Remembering the excitement I felt at such a juncture has given me the biggest smile. Can you remember that feeling? I’m encouraged that this is a true awakening and we are going to see Katherine grow into her sexuality as she continues to lean into the new.
