Do Revenge, a sapphic movie about two teenagers seeking revenge on those who have wronged them, is coming to Netflix on September 16!
Do Revenge has Mean Girls vibes, except Janis Ian and Regina George come together. “A dethroned queen bee at a posh private high school strikes a secret deal with an unassuming new student to exact revenge on each other’s enemies,” the film’s Netflix page reads.
Co-written by Thor: Love and Thunder’s Jennifer Kaytan Robinson, the movie does not underestimate the power of young females. “Do Revenge is a subverted Hitchcock-ian dark comedy featuring the scariest protagonists of all: teenage girls.” It also stars Maya Hawke, who we loved to see playing young lesbian hero, Robin, in Stranger Things.
Drea’s enemy is her ex-boyfriend Max, who leaked a sex tape she sent him — only to organize a group of “feminist” hetero boys claiming to support women.
Eleanor’s beef is with a girl who outed her to the school by claiming she forced herself upon her, which led to her social isolation.
Things aren’t always what they seem in Do Revenge. “I think there are different points where everyone’s the villain and everyone’s the hero in this story,” Co-writer Robinson told Elle. “And that is so much of what growing up is. I wanted to make something that paints with all the colors of adolescence.”
Like Mean Girls, the movie juggles humor and some very serious topics. “There is the comment on, not necessarily cancel culture, but accountability versus the way that we tear people down without the right information potentially, and the way that we lift people up without the right information potentially,” Robinson explains. “And then on the other side of that, it’s also [about] the way in which we deal with trauma. So, focusing on what happens and how it happens and why it happens and then how we deal with it.”
Robinson warns to not take the film too seriously, however. “We want you to have a great fucking time,” she says. “That’s what this is. That’s what it should be. We’re not trying to solve world peace. This is not some big political statement. It’s just a really fun movie that looks cool and stars a bunch of really excellent actors who are at the top of their craft, and are also just gorgeous.”
Most importantly, Do Revenge is confirmed “gay.”
Netflix posted some pretty intimate pictures between Drea and Eleanor (above), but we all know that girls can (and should) have close friendships. Whether the nature of their friendship was lesbian or not was still up for debate… until Jennifer Kaytin Robinson confirmed the movie is “gay.”
The “gayness” might not be between Eleanor and Drea, but it’s pretty likely.
After Netflix axed First Kill, it will be good to see another sapphic romance on our screens. The problem, however, is that Do Revenge is a film, not a whole series, and that it doesn’t include the same racial diversity that First Kill did.
