“Grey’s Anatomy” recap (10.23): Burst Your Bubble
At the MerDer mansion, Meredith is making sweet breakfast love to some homemade waffles, while chatting with Derek over Skype. Turns out that between crying jags and calls back home, Amelia is a killer cook. Derek is stuck in DC and asks Amelia to step in for him on his date/surgery with Meredith. Meredith would be pissed if those waffles weren’t so goddamn delicious.
Stephanie and Bailey make rounds together, while discussing how to handle the whole Brayden genome debacle. Steph suggests that Bailey speak to the board, so she finds Cristina. When Cristina hears that the experimental treatment worked, Bailey is rewarded with a penultimate Cristina Yang high five.
Jackson and April, now that they have made up, are finally rejoicing in their little zygote. Jackson reminds April that they have to tell his mother soon, you know, to avoid her maternal apocalypse. April is so geeked that she almost spills the beans to Callie. Callie gets called into an exam room before she gets the chance.
Cristina has given her notice, and so far, the hospital hasn’t fallen apart. Yet. Meredith feels a storm a brewing however, even though Cristina asserts that Owen has been supportive of her decision. In fact, she’s been tasked to interview replacements for Dr. Russell’s position.
April is seeing patients in the ER when Jo pops up, trying to make herself as useful as possible. When an incoming patient comes in needing an x-ray, April passes him off to a grateful Jo.
It’s time for some truth bombs and Bailey has a doozy. She butters up Brayden’s parents by giving their son a clean bill of health and they thank her for letting Brayden heal on his own. Yeah about that. She confesses to giving Brayden the genome against their wishes, thinking that they will forgive and forget since it kind of saved their child’s life. Wrongo. They are planning to sue the hospital, and it’s not just Bailey who is in deep shit. Stephanie knew what was happening, so she is also held responsible. Bailey sticks strong to her guns though, refusing to apologize for something she doesn’t consider a mistake.
In the Arizona Robbins Center for Tiny Humans (the NICU), Shane is assigned to her service for the day. There is a little baby born with his intestines outside of his body that needs special care. Low and behold, Alex pops in to check on some past patients and say hi. He asks Shane about a favorite patient of his, then promptly walks away with his chart to see him.
Richard, Leah and Ben are working with a young woman who is a survivor or rectal cancer. Because of all the treatments, she now can’t control her sphincter. In other words, the poor girl is a farting machine. Richard has had her keep a poop diary, but since she’s still…going frequently, Richard is hesitant to implant the rectal pacemaker. Instead they suggest a high fiber diet, and anti-diarrheals. Then, as if in empathetic response, Leah lets out a huge burp in front of the patients. Hey, Derek didn’t say you had to belch in the stairwell. She apologizes to Richard, but the burp has gotten her kicked off of lead surgeon position.
Callie and Jo (Team Ortho-Glo!) are working on April’s patient when she arrives to check on him. April’s sunny disposition is already creeping on Callie’s nerves, earning her the nickname of Grumpus. Jo drops what she’s doing to fill April in, but Callie calls her back over sharply. When April dares to call Callie the G word again, Callie threatened to stick a bone drill where the sun don’t shine.
Amelia and Meredith are running through there surgical plans, but keep getting interrupted by Amelia’s ringing phone. Meredith apologizes for setting a currently frazzled example of marriage and family, but Amelia isn’t in the mood. She preferred the old Meredith who didn’t give a shit about her life. Meredith looks a bit stung by the remark.
Meanwhile, Cristina is in a special kind of hell, interviewing potential cardio-thoracic replacements. She can barely conceal her boredom.
Shane finds Alex chatting with his little former patient Kevin and his family. Alex offers to do Kevin’s surgery that day, which comes as a surprise to Shane. Robbins isn’t going to be happy when she finds out that Alex swiped her surgery, Outside, Alex gets territorial and offers to let Shane assist him on the surgery if he keeps quiet about it. If not, Alex threatens to lie about Shane being negligent to Robbins. Shane is horrified, and it only gets worse when Alex reminds him that Shane was responsible for his father’s death. Whoa Alex, you were always a bit of a dick, but this new pompous attitude does not look good on you.
Cristina is interviewing an impressive, overachieving young woman, when Owen interrupts to ask about her conversation with Bailey that morning. Cristina feigns ignorance, which Owen decides is probably for the best anyway. He reminds Cristina to go easy on the candidates. Nobody will ever be quite as amazing as she is. This makes Cristina smile.
Avery, with Steph by his side, tries to reason with Brayden’s parents, but they assume that since Bailey lied about the genome, she’s actually been fudging Brayden’s T-Cell numbers too. They are scared to take him home in the event that he falls ill again. Avery assures them that is not the case. When the parents ask if Avery is a parent, he reveals that he and April are expecting. Stephanie gets her second kick to the gut that day. Avery agrees to run all new labs for Brayden.
In Ortho-land, Callie and Jo are working together while April attends to the patient’s other needs. When another x-ray is called for, April runs like the wind, with Jo yes, maam’ing her all the way out the door. Callie, who is still perturbed from before, asks when Jo turned into such a prissy kiss-ass. There is no room in Ortho for priss. Only grit. In ortho, you chew aluminum foil for kicks. In ortho, you purposely stub your own toes just to feel alive. Ortho-land is hardcore.
In the Farting Lady’s room, the patient’s husband suggests yoga to his wife while Leah administers her medicine. Considering that yoga requires you to stick your ass in the air in the middle of a hot room, that idea is quickly nixed. The patient explains to Leah that she was fired from her job as a professional dancer when she Jackson Pollack’ed all over the stage in the middle of a pirouette.
When Arizona stops by to check on little Kevin, she’s surprised to find out that he’s already being prepped for surgery. Arizona is fuming when she see’s Alex and accuses him of poaching patients. Her fury only grows when Shane shows up, ready to join him. She storms off, but not before poking Alex in the chest and calling him a jerk-ass.
In the cafeteria, Cristina and Meredith bitch about cardio-thoracic candidates over lunch. Cristina isn’t thrilled with any of them, and it suddenly clicks to Meredith why Owen is having her do the interviews. He wants to boost Cristina’s ego, then offer her the job. Cristina argues that that isn’t the case and she’s only a first year attending. Meredith is like, “Hello, you are about to be running your own hospital in Switzerland.” Point made, Grey.
Also lunching are Leah, Ben and Steph. Leah is telling them about the farting dancer, and how she feels for her. Leah can’t seem to control her own gas issues, and lets out a few huge belches at the table. Stephanie jokes that she should get a magnetic esophageal sphincter implant, and a light bulb goes off in Leah’s head. Could the same magnets work for her patient. Ben suggests that she pitch it to Richard.
Ben then asks Steph about Bailey, and if she knows why she’s been MIA all day. Her look gives it away. Ben bursts in to the conference room to confront Bailey about her recklessness. Before she can even explain herself, Owen comes in to give her the bad news. She is being charged with assault and battery. She calmly asks Ben to pick up Tuck from soccer practice, and sends him off. Her only real regret is not seeing Brayden finally leave his bubble.
Alex and Shane are in surgery, when Arizona comes in and orders Shane back to the NICU where he is supposed to be. Amelia and Meredith are also in surgery, so Meredith tries a different tactic and tries to encourage Amelia to go back home. Amelia apologizes for being rude, and wonders if Meredith is kicking her out now because of it. Meredith assures her that is not the case. Amelia is relieved because she freaking loves it at Grey Sloan and wants to stay.
Leah and Richard show the magnetic device, henceforth known as “The Robotic Butthole,” to their patient. After a few initial concerns about the fact that the implant wasn’t originally designed for that purpose (and the husband’s freakout about living in a cloud of gas for the rest of his life), they agree to the surgery.
In Ortho-land, Callie is eager to check on the patient’s progress but April hesitates because of the x-ray. After Callie asks a few times, Jo yells at April to put on a lead apron already. April looks Callie in the eye and explains she can’t be around the x-ray and leaves. Understanding washes over Callie, then compassion for April, and she yells at Jo for being so erratic that day.
Shane is back in NICU applying a special medicine to the little inside out organ baby. He talks to the little guy, but before he can do anything to stop it, the thin membrane holding in the baby’s intestines ruptures. He tries to hold them in place while yelling for help. Alex and Arizona are operating while busting each other’s chops, when a call comes through the Arizona is needed right away in the NICU. When she arrives, she jumps into action and instructs a crying Shane to leave.
Cristina finds an impressive candidate, but when he brings up the Harper Avery awards, she turns sour. He asks if the rumors are true. That working at GSM means he’ll never win the award, because that’s kind of his goal. Cristina tells him that people who really want to win the Harper Avery never do because it’s about the patients and the medicine. Not the act of winning. Then she politely kicks his ass out.
After the second set of labs is run and Brayden is deemed to be in the clear, he is allowed to leave the bubble. He runs (in dramatic slow motion) and jumps into his parent’s arms, while Bailey watches from a distance. Owen takes the opportunity to try and reason with his parents, but they are out for blood. They want Bailey’s medical license, and if anything had happened to Brayden, they would have wanted to see her in prison. For some reason, Stephanie steps in and offers to take the blame. (OK, I know what Bailey did was wrong, but I have a soft spot for her. Brayden would have died in that bubble without Bailey’s genome. The lack of compassion and qualms these parents have for her livelihood is really pissing me off. You? OK, back to Stephanie.) Owen and Avery go with it, gathering around Steph and using her inexperience as the scapegoat. The father starts yelling, but mercifully his wife suggests that they all just take their now-healthy son home, and put this all behind them.
Richard and Leah operate on Farting Lady, and Richard walks her gently through the procedure. He has to correct her often, and the look in his eyes does not exactly inspire confidence.
Callie finds April at the Nurse’s station, and quietly asks how far along she is. She’s ten weeks, and pulls out a sonogram to show Callie. Callie begins to cry, and April knows it’s not about her. Because of the accident, Callie can’t have another baby, and that’s why she was so upset earlier in the day. They both tearfully apologize to each other, and Jo pops up and gets her apologies in too. She’s been so stressed since she found out that a resident won’t be coming back the following year that her emotions have been all over the place. They don’t offer her much support, and she’s left to scratch at the increasingly large rash on her neck.
While Amelia and Meredith get cleaned up from their successful surgery, Amelia tells her that she’s ready to break up with her fiancĂ©. She’s been through a lot in the last few years, and so has he, but she needs a fresh start. Without him.
Bailey flips out when she hears what Stephanie did, and worse yet, Owen believes that Steph is the one that actually went and injected Brayden. She will receive one week’s suspension for her actions, and thankfully no legal action. When Owen leaves, Bailey tries to yell at Stephanie, but the resident has no regrets. She couldn’t let all of Bailey’s work go to waste when it has the potential to save many more lives. Besides, she knows that it’s a possibility that she might get booted from the program. Bailey pulls Stephanie in for a grateful hug and promises to fight for her if that ever becomes an issue.
Leah and Richard watch their patient from the hall, and a satisfied Leah requests to stay on her case for follow up. Richard pulls Leah aside for a heart to heart. He tells her that she isn’t cut out to be a surgeon. Observing her in surgery just confirmed his suspicions. Her faces falls, and she promises to work harder but his mind is made up. She asks if it’s about the harassment claim she filed, and he says no. Richard offers to get her spot in a space station research hospital with an old friend who owes him a favor. She tearfully thanks him, because there isn’t anything more to say.
Alex finds Arizona in the NICU to try and explain his actions. He’s struggling in private practice, and surgeries are few and far between, which means so is the money. He stole the case because he was desperate. Arizona reminds him to use his words like a big boy, and ask for help next time.
Bailey tries to explain to Ben why she did what she did. When he asks if the risk was worth it, without hesitation she says yes. Jackson and April, cuddle on their way out and Jackson tells April that Stephanie knows about the baby. April is good natured about it, considering she spilled her secret too. Next up, Mama Avery.
The residents are all still freaking out about who’s on the chopping block. A suspension doesn’t help Stephanie, Jo is covered with hives, and Shane broke a baby. Leah doesn’t let on about her crushing news and tells them all that they will be fine. Leah shoos them away and they take off, none the wiser. Shane sticks around for a little more reassurance, which she gives him. When he leaves, she’s left to clean out her locker alone, and leave without saying goodbye.
Leah had a complicated journey on Grey’s Anatomy, but over the course of this season, we’ve gotten the chance to see her as more than just some uptight, ruthlessly ambitious resident. At times she wore her heart on her sleeve, and every so often, she’d find a way to make you understand her, and maybe even like her. She’s been an easy character to villainize, because she was seen as a threat to Callie and Arizona’s relationship. The only thing that truly came between Calzona, was Calzona. I for one will miss watching her fumble over herself, time and time again, only to walk away a little wiser, and a little kinder. Also the chin dimple. I’ll miss that too. Her character had run its course, so goodbye Leah Murphy. Good luck in space!
Callie and Arizona sit up in bed together, while Callie delivers her devastating news. Arizona takes the initiative and offers to carry the baby. Callie is worried that they are still too fragile, and refuses to put them in a position where they could fall apart again. Callie says they have a beautiful life, and a beautiful daughter, and that can be enough. Arizona calls her Calliope, and whispers “I loves you.” They embrace, but the look on Arizona’s face tells us that she knows it isn’t enough for Callie. The longing for another child is the song that plays in her wife’s heart, and it is not easily silenced even if science deems it so. God, I hope Arizona doesn’t pull a Tina Kenard and get inseminated in secret.
Owen finds Cristina pouring over the resumes, and asks if she’s found any worthy candidates. She tells him that any of them would be a fine fit. He sits down and starts talking about how the Harper Avery Foundation is trying to save face, and might be willing to donate a large chunk of change to the cardiac department. She interrupts and begs him not to ask her to stay and take the job. He admits that he wanted to, but he won’t because he knows she has to go. He then grabs her and they kiss passionately. He asks her to be with him until it’s time for her to leave, and she agrees. Looks like Crowen will not go out with a whisper, but rather a bang. Or a bunch of bangs. They will be banging, is what I’m trying to say.
Derek finally comes home from DC with a bottle of expensive champagne in hand. Meredith happily explains that Amelia wants to stay and her being around will help alleviate the stress of balancing their careers, the White House, research and the kids. Derek is thrilled because if Amelia can move to Seattle, then they can all move to DC. Meredith is not thrilled about this development. Derek explains that he met the President (damn you Fitz!) and was offered a major position at the capital. They even scored an attending position for Meredith to sweeten the deal. With Cristina and Alex moving on, he suggests that perhaps it’s time that they do as well. Meredith sits there, watching everything around her click into motion without a real say in the matter.
