“Grey’s Anatomy” recap (12.15): Forgiveness

Viewers: Arizona, no!

Arizona: Arizona, yes.

This is a thing you will find yourself yelling at your TV screen during this week’s episode of Grey’s. Arizona, plucky baby doctor, swinging single lady, dimples for days, can’t keep April’s big secret to herself. We pick up where we were last week, but this time, we see Arizona and Jackson’s conversation. At first, Jackson thinks she’s there to tell him that April knows that he’s dating again, but then an Exorcism-like wave of word vomit spews forth from Arizona. She tells him that April is pregnant, just in time for April to walk in and tell him herself.

Awkwardly waiting elsewhere in the hospital are DeLuca and Richard. They are supposed to have dinner with Maggie, but she has to cancel. She does, however, suggest the two men have dinner together, but each feigns exhaustion and runs the other way. That whole “wildcat” thing is never going to be less weird, is it?

Maggie, pulling a total Maggie, interrupts Meredith and Thorpe as they are flirting outside. I have to say; Meredith still has a wicked flirt. She tells Thorpe she’ll have drinks with him the next day-if she doesn’t change her mind first. Damn, girl! Then she’s off to a multiple organ transplants because what is sleep and who are children?

A furious Jackson and a befuddled April fight about the pregnancy in the lab. April admits she knew about the baby before the divorce but her pager starts blowing up before she can explain more, and she runs off to the triple organ transplant as well. It’s a transplant party up in here!

Owen and Amelia continue their reign of terrifying cuteness which is starting to pull me in, despite my best efforts. Amelia adorably gives him shit about living in that trailer, and Owen reveals that his birthday is coming up, and he wants to have lobsters (and sex) with her.

So this triple transplant is being headed up by Alex, who’s teenage patient is suffering from Cystic Fibrosis, which has compromised multiple organs. Kelsey, the patient, is about to get a new set of lungs, liver and pancreas. (I didn’t even know they did pancreas transplants.) It’s a hugely risky surgery, but it’s really Kelsey’s only chance. Kelsey is hesitant, but Alex brings up the fact that she could be well enough to attend her spring formal. That seals the deal.

Maggie meets up with Meredith and Alex, where she’s geeking out about her sister’s upcoming date. Alex counters that Meredith only said yes so she could have more time and cancel later. Alex and Maggie have a little “who knows Meredith better” head butting, but Meredith insists that she is in fact going.

As April prepares for an incoming trauma, Arizona tries to apologize for what she’s done. April isn’t interested in her apology, or her reasons. She tells her former best friend to go to hell.

Riggs decides to add his two cents on the whole April/Jackson situation, saying he’d be angry too if he were Jackson. The thing is, April knows all of this. Her reasons for not telling him are much more complicated than anyone is realizing. She’s spared any more of his advice when the medicopter delivers a woman named Tess who was badly injured while mountain climbing.

Maggie is going over the triple organ transplant procedure with Jo when DeLuca walks in. At first, Maggie asks if he wants to scrub in and offers to boot one of the other residents to make room for him. That’s the opposite of what DeLuca wants, because he’s already feeling the heat for dating an attending, so he literally runs away when Maggie has her back turned.

While Meredith is getting pumped up for the transplant, Callie walks into the bathroom to see her doing jumping jacks. While Callie sits on the throne, Meredith tells her about drinks with Thorpe. Callie calms Meredith’s fears about getting back into the dating thing, and Meredith takes off before Callie realizes she’s gone. Bailey walks in to hear Callie talking to herself, which sounds not unlike she’s really trying to cheer on a poop. It’s kind of hilarious.

April has to rush Tess to the OR because of her extensive injuries, just in time to see her parents as they arrive. Tess’s mother yells at her boyfriend for bringing her to the mountain in the first place.

Alex readies everyone for the big transplant surgery, explaining that it will be long and exhausting, so people should naps, eat, etc. when they have the chance. Maggie wastes no time in bugging Meredith about her date while Mer is harvesting organs. Meredith turns the attention on to Jo, who tosses it back to Steph. Alex butts in to tell Meredith that if she wants to cancel the date, she ought to do it right away, much to Maggie’s dismay.

Because Tess doesn’t have any signed medical directives and her fiance isn’t her legal medical proxy, the docs don’t know what her wishes are if things go south.

Meredith arrives to help with the transplant, but Maggie tells her they aren’t ready for her yet and to take the time to get ready for her date. This only irritates Meredith more, but she leaves any way. Maggie yells at Alex to be more supportive of the date, but Alex thinks that Maggie’s hovering will actually push Mer to change her mind. I have to go with Alex on this one.

Meredith does give Maggie’s words some thought and does a little leg shaving during her downtime. Amelia walks in and sees, and actually offers to help her out. Not with the leg shaving, but with an outfit. See Meredith doesn’t have a change of clothes, so Amelia lends her a sexy top and heels.

Arizona, who is beside herself with her terrible decision, turns to one of the only people she can trust: Callie. When she reveals what she did, she’s hoping Callie will take her side, but she doesn’t. She is kind to her ex about it, though. Arizona asks Callie what she would think if it had been their baby, and Callie didn’t know. (Oooooof my Calzona feels.) Callie tells Arizona that she’d want to hear it directly from her and that she pretty much screwed this up.

DeLuca and Cross watch the triple transplant from the OR theatre, and Cross gives DeLuca shit about dating Maggie. He thinks DeLuca is only doing it to get ahead, which infuriates DeLuca who kindly offers to punch Cross in the cajones.

Unfortunately for Tess, things do indeed go south, and she’s pronounced brain dead. April is disheartened, and Jackson arrives with anger flashing in his eyes, to make matters worse. It’s an ugly scene. Jackson mentions that knowing about the pregnancy would have changed his mind about filing for divorce, and that’s exactly what April didn’t want. To stay together for that reason only. Their argument gets so heated that Richard has to step in and break it up.

Meredith puts on the clothes that Amelia left out for her, and she looks amazing. However, the more she looks at herself and it all sinks in, the more unsure she becomes.

Meredith heads back into the OR to get to work, and when Maggie pushes again, Meredith tells Jo to text Thorpe for her and cancel the date. Alex was totally right.

While April tries not to break down in an empty exam room, Owen finds her and gives her a big hug. He reminds her that there is something really wonderful coming out of all of this sadness and anger. She’s having a baby.

Arizona, who is getting pretty desperate at this point to have someone tell her she isn’t a terrible person, finds an unsympathetic Bailey. Besides the fact that Arizona broke the law by revealing April’s condition, Bailey thinks Arizona was just plain wrong as a friend.

Richard attempts to comfort Jackson and is met with anger, which he quickly diffuses. If anyone understands what Jackson is feeling, it’s Richard. He tells his step-son it’s time to step up, there’s a baby on the way.

When April, Owen and Riggs break the bad news to Tess’s parents. Her mother doesn’t want to accept that Tess is not going to wake up, even as her fiance argues that Tess would want to be taken off life support.

Kelsey’s transplant is going swimmingly, and once Maggie’s part is over, Alex takes the opportunity to chat with Meredith alone. He does the whole reverse psychology thing with Meredith, making her defend Thorpe, which only endears him more to her. Man, Alex, you really are her person. That was such a Yang move.

Tess’s parents are busy picking out a long-term facility, and Riggs surprisingly gives them a bit of hope, saying you never know. Owen is pissed at Riggs for giving them hope when it’s obvious that Tess is never going to wake up. It turns into a whole battle about Owen’s sister, and how Riggs think Owen gave up on her while he stayed behind to try and find her. He tells Owen that instead of beating him up, maybe he should turn some of that anger inwards.

Amelia finds Arizona in the lounge and by then, everyone at the hospital knows what went down. Amelia knows a thing or two about self-loathing and forgiveness, though. She tells Arizona that there’s no way to make up for what she did, and simply accept it. Maybe one day April will forgive her, but maybe she won’t, but there’s nothing more Arizona can do.

Maggie checks in with DeLuca after she’s done for the day, but he’s acting all weird and distant. He wants to stay and study, rather than go home with her, and she’s confused. He wanted to be out about their relationship, but now it appears that it’s all backfiring.

After Meredith gets out of surgery, she finds Thorpe waiting for their date. She tells him she’s too tired to go out, and he offers to give her a ride home. They sit and eat fast food in his car, laughing and talking about surgeries. It’s kind of a perfect first date for Meredith afterall.

Not having a perfect date is Amelia, who shows up at Owen’s place with live lobsters in hand to find him drunk. He’d forgotten about their plans and all the alcohol and seeing Owen drunk sends Amelia running for the hills.

Jackson shows up at April’s and, at first, he’s there to offer apologies. However, things quickly escalate when he asks April if she was waiting until it was too late to have an abortion. April is horrified, especially since Jackson know’s that she’d never have one. She tells Jackson that from here on out, all decisions about this child will be hers. They aren’t a team anymore. April has to look out for herself and her baby now.

What did you think of “I’m Not Waiting Anymore?”
