Primetime Emmy Nominations announced – and we have feelings
TV’s best and brightest were awakened with a happy phone call this morning with news of the 2012 Primetime Emmy Nominations. Well, not all of the best and brightest. As usual, the list was full of surprises and snubs that will give us plenty to talk about between now and the awards ceremony on September 23.
Let’s get right to the categories we care most about: the women! Please vote in the polls below to let us know who you’ll be rooting for come September.
Supporting Actress in a Comedy SeriesMayim Bialik – Big Bang Theory
Merrit Wever – Nurse Jackie
Julie Bowen – Modern Family
Kristin Wiig – Saturday Night Live
Sofia Vergara – Modern Family
Kathryn Joosten – Desperate Housewives
Excuse me, distinguished members of the Academy, but where the hell is Jane Lynch? Or Naya Rivera? Or Lea Michele? That said, I can’t deny the right of any of the nominees to be on the list. Merrit Wever had a stand out year on Nurse Jackie, as did Mayim Bialak on Big Bang Theory. But I suspect we’ll see a well-deserved tribute to the beloved Kathryn Joosten.
Outstanding Comedy Series
Girls
30 Rock
Veep
Modern Family
Big Bang Theory
I think my cable cut out during this category, because I didn’t hear Parks & Recreation nominated. Inconceivable!
Outstanding Drama Series
Boardwalk Empire
Breaking Bad
Downton Abbey
Mad Men
Homeland
Game Of Thrones
How could The Good Wife not be on this list? Especially considering the somewhat lackluster season of Mad Men. Why don’t people ask me before they make their nominations?
Outstanding Drama SeriesIn other categories, Dot Marie Jones is representing Glee (is she really the only Glee nomination?) in Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series. Margaret Cho‘s amazing Kim Jong on 30 Rock also made that list. For the Miniseries/Movie categories, Connie Britton, Emma Thompson, and Julianne Moore got nods for Lead Actress and Jessica Lange and Sarah Paulson received nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress. Carrie Brownstein and her Portlandia co-writers (including out writer Karey Dornetto) got a writing nod and Cat Deely is up for Outstanding Reality Host.

Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
Archie Panjabi – The Good Wife
Anna Gunn – Breaking Bad
Maggie Smith – Downton Abbey
Joanne Froggatt – Downton Abbey
Christina Hendricks – Mad Men
Christine Baranski – The Good Wife
Archie Panjabi was a revelation as Kalinda this year, especially in the last few episodes of The Good Wife. (I’m sure the sexy has nothing to do with my opinion.) But this was Christine Baranski‘s season. I have a feeling Dame Maggie Smith will take the award home, but Baranski has been the best thing about the best show on TV this year.
Lead Actress in a Drama Series
Julianna Marguiles – The Good Wife
Michelle Dockery – Downton Abbey
Elisabeth Moss – Mad Men
Kathy Bates – Harry’s Law
Claire Danes – Homeland
Glenn Close – Damages
If you don’t already know that Claire Danes has this category sewn up, you obviously haven’t seen Homeland. Although I wouldn’t pout to see any of these women take home the gold.

Lead Actress in a Comedy Series
Zooey Deschanel – New Girl
Lena Dunham – Girls
Edie Falco – Nurse Jackie
Amy Poehler – Parks & Recreation
Tina Fey – 30 Rock
Julia Louis-Dreyfuss – Veep
Melissa McCarthy –Mike & Molly
I would include Laura Dern for Enlightened, but I think I’m the only person who watches that show. Otherwise, no real quarrels with this category beyond my continued bewilderment at the popularity of Lena Dunham and Girls. Obviously. I’m missing the point. I’m pulling for Amy Poehler – take that any way you’d like.
