Tampa Baes Episode 3 Recap: “Baes Overboard”

We begin episode 3 with the lesbians still out on the tiki bar boat. Brianna went off on Shiva and we’re hanging out in the aftermath of that now. Cuppie just wants to do body shots and watch dolphins but everyone has to listen to this pop off. They position themselves on opposite sides of the tiny boat to cool off. Olivia goes to comfort Shiva, who’s crying. I would be crying too because Brianna slaughtered her with those words, y’all. “I don’t really get confrontational so obviously I didn’t say a lot. I just cried.” Don’t hurt the Pisces babies, okay? They’re sensitive. Shiva’s pride took a hit.

Haley goes over to talk to Shiva and apologize on behalf of her girlfriend. That was nice. Brianna is still talking her shit and probably very fueled by boozy confidence.

Meanwhile, Cuppie and Mel have partitioned themselves off in the bathroom to escape the drama and cannot stop laughing. Good vibes there. I’m cackling because Mel’s boisterous laughing is too good. That wraps up the boat outing.

Olivia and Haley are hanging out by Haley’s pool. They process what went down on the booze cruise. Haley reiterates that Briana really does not like anyone asking about their relationship. Also everyone should stay in their lane and Shiva is sneaky sometimes. Okay.

Cuppie’s back, rocking her third-wheel role with Marissa and Summer. She’s telling them about the boat fight. “Nobody could calm Murphy (Brianna) down.” Yeah, she’s not wrong there. Homegirl was looking to fight, period. Marissa thinks Brianna and Haley can’t stand people not thinking they’re cool and that’s why they’re always on the defense.

Jordan set up a softball game for the gang and they’re all wondering if it’s going to be awkward for the rival “it couples” to see each other again. My bets are on yes, and I’m excited to see it. Cut to Marissa in an interview saying, “I think if you are the it couple, you just are.” You don’t have to try hard — you just love each other and are together all the time. I’m taking down notes: ‘How to It Couple.’ Got it!

Shiva and Jordan are grabbing some coffee. Shiva isn’t gonna hang onto the tiki boat thing, she’s just going to let that go. Wise choice. Shiva asks Jordan about her long distance girlfriend. They’re almost at the six month anniversary mark to which Shiva retorts, “That’s literally like four years in lesbian, basically.” I’m laughing and crying at the truth in those words.

Aaah, the lesbian long distance relationship. It wouldn’t be lesbian reality if there wasn’t at least one on the show. Jordan is committed, and if a couple-hour car ride is what it takes, “all lesbians know that sometimes that’s what you gotta do.” Facts, sis.

Jordan is at a point in her life where she wants to come out to her grandparents. It’s becoming too stressful and inauthentic for her to compartmentalize her life with them. “I don’t want to have to hide who I love or who I am.” We love to hear it, every time! Lesbian declarations of living thier lives out and proud are the best, hands down.

Shiva shares that she doesn’t foresee ever telling her own Iranian grandparents. Culturally, she doesn’t think it will even compute. It’s a struggle we all know too well — one way or another, there’s a reason we can’t always be out to everyone. So big respect to Shiva and her perspective as well.

Mel is with Summer at the med spa Summer works at. Mel’s going to be painting a mural at the spa. She broaches the subject of Summer and Marissa modeling for a painting and Summer is instantly excited about the idea. Mel has really gotten herself into a hot niche painting sexy lesbians often. I might have to reconsider my own artistic pursuits.

The bomb is dropped when Summer realizes that Mel intends to paint them nude, or semi nude. She feels like she’s already committed and has to roll with it. Welp.

Mack, Jordan, and Shiva are out at an ax throwing venue, intending to scout for players for their softball game. Shiva is mostly interested in looking for ladies to date. One woman, Reide, catches her eye and Shiva spends the outing flirting and talking with her. They recruit Reide and her friends to play softball. Seems like a real win/win scenario. Taking notes that maybe ax throwing bars are the place to go to meet hot athletic women?

Marissa and Summer are cozy at home that evening, and Summer discloses the commitment she made about posing for the painting. “Do you want me to have my titties out on you?!?” Marissa blurts out. Y’all think they’re gonna follow through or nah?

Jordan’s mom comes over and they talk about how good she feels living back in Tampa, a progressive city with a big lesbian community where she feels comfortable. Her mom broaches the subject of Jordan telling her grandparents and Jordan admits she’s scared. She doesn’t want to potentially lose any time with them if they choose not to accept her.

Jordan is out warming up for the softball game, and has brought along her mom and sisters to play — so sweet! Brianna, Haley, and Mack roll up next. Mel, Olivia, Cuppie and Shiva roll up and Shiva is straight clowning. I love it. Marissa and Summer bring food, because Marissa is Greek af and that’s how they roll. Ali and Nelly are here too. The whole bae squad.

Marissa and Summer straight up ignore Brianna and Haley saying hi, so this event is certainly off to a start! Shit has not been worked out and doesn’t look like it’s going to be today. Reide and friends show up (Shiva’s crush & co. from the axe place.) Softball game is on.

Cuppie is on the field with a mimosa in hand. Shiva’s eyes are on Reide. Everyone is adorable and they still have a good time despite the rift hanging in the air. Brianna makes a point to go talk to Shiva, explaining why she was triggered on the boat, and apologizes. Shiva is damn proud to have gotten an apology from big bad Brianna Murphy. For real sis, that’s somethin.

Shiva is googley-eyed over Reide and really excited to see where that goes — even though Reide says she’s straight. Ohhhhhh girl. That spells trouble, but how many of us can say we’ve never been trippin’ over a straight girl? Probably none.

Now we are at Shiva’s Mom’s house and I am so happy to hear that her Iranian parents are so accepting of her sexuality. She says they’re, “like super chills and relaxed and accepting of who I am.” She knows this is not common for Iranian families and feels incredibly blessed by her luck. Mel and Jordan come over to eat a meal. Summer and Marissa join. This is so sweet. Persian food is delicious and I’ve never wanted to sit in on a scene and partake more.

Shiva asks her mom how to say gay in Farsi and her mom doesn’t think there is a word for it. Cue jaw drop. It’s not surprising as much as it is scary to think about. Iran is not kind to homosexuals, and that’s putting it entirely mildly. So, hugs to Shiva’s mom for being loving and wonderful and feeding a houseful of lesbians and discussing the topic so openly. You are the change we want to see in the world.

It’s the big moment and Shiva rides with Jordan to drop her grandparent’s letter in the mailbox. She chose this route because she doesn’t want the disclosure to be intimate and I totally understand and respect that. Some things need to be more reserved and detached as a protective mechanism. Give them the space to take in the information. She also knows this route will keep her from back-peddling. It shows her resolve to stick with the choice to be out, all the way. Rock on, Jordan. We’re proud of you.

Marissa and Summer roll up to Jordan’s. It’s time to model for the painting. Heck yes. They lubricate the nerves with wine as Summer and Jordan check out the outfits Jordan has hanging up in the studio. They’re nervous. Jordan tells them she would love it if they would model nude, and Marissa is squirming. They need to drink more wine, I think. They decide just to get going and see how far they are willing to go, “when we get there.”

Back to Jordan and Shiva driving around. Jordan pulls over and decides she wants to give her grandparents a heads up. She texts them, letting them know that she mailed a letter and they should be looking out for it. Jordan is feeling the weight of what she just did and hella anxious. And then her grandparents call her. The episode ends so we won’t get resolve on this situation until next time.
