The L Word Generation Q: Season 3 Episode 8 Recap

You can find the episode seven recap here. And with that, lez move along!

Finley and Sophie are texting again. I am not amused. These two love to distract themselves from their own bullshit and can’t sit with themselves alone for five minutes, apparently.

Oh wow! Finley’s Mom shows up at the bar! Surprise! Happy Thanksgiving! I cannot wait to see how this plays out.

Dre and Dani are sleeping together. Dani really gave up her ‘just a client’ ruse fast, huh? She deserves someone who isn’t going to fuck her over and I hope it’s Dre. Homegirl can only deal with so much heartbreak. Yes, I know from experience.

Sophie to the rescue!

Unable to cope with her Mom’s sudden appearance alone, Finley calls Sophie asking for her support. “I didn’t know who else to call,” she says. Sophie goes the route of compassion and tells her own family that they will all be going to spend Thanksgiving at Dana’s bar with Finley and her Mom. They aren’t enthusiastic about this idea but Sophie gets her way.

Thanksgiving date for Dre and Dani.

Flights out are not happening, and Dre isn’t going to make it to visit her family as planned. Dani keeps it positive and encourages Dre, telling her they can make her family’s signature recipe together as she pulls out a giant box of saltine crackers. I’m actually really glad Dani won’t be spending Thanksgiving with Sophie and her family as she had intended. That very gray area friendship is too “best friend with your exes” lesbian stereotype for my taste, but perhaps that’s just me because I’m a Taurus and I hold grudges.

Tess needs space from Shane which is the best news ever. Hopefully within that distance, Shane can recognize the emotional and physical drain that Tess has truly been on her life (and I’m pretty sure there’s been a financial drain too.)

Not a good vibe.

The gang’s Thanksgiving dinner at Dana’s remains awkward. Finley’s mom keeps trying to pick a fight with her which is just sad. Why bother traveling to spend the holiday with Finley without any intention to show her some love? Oh wait — the bomb drops.

Finley’s mom is leaving her Dad because she isn’t happy. Instead of seeking companionship from Finley she’s, essentially, bullying Fin into aiding her in figuring out her new life. This woman is traumatized and toxic. All she can manage to offer Finley is a mean edge and accusations. Finley’s left hurt and confused, which I suspect is how she spent most of her childhood. And Thanksgiving dinner hasn’t really even started yet.

Roxy comes up at Dani’s intimate Thanksgiving with Dre, in relation to Dre’s situationship. Also fun facts that come up: Dani’s Mom passing when she was ten and her Dad being in prison. Ooof. Dani’s accustomed to quiet and small Thanksgiving holidays, while Dre is used to big and loud. “We can do loud,” Dani says, “Come on, let’s go.”

Everyone’s arrived to witness the shit show now.

Will Finley’s Mom be her unraveling? It looks like the visit might push her over the edge. Finley decides this is the time to make her amends. “You’ve embarrassed me your whole life, Sarah. What is the point of apologizing for one thing when she just can’t remember all the others?” she spews out while looking around the table for support. Dani and Dre walk in to join the larger festivities as everyone sits in stunned silence.

These two as the cutest Aunt & Niece duo. 😊

Angie, with Shane as her sidekick, breaks the teacher’s car window to get the book she made back (ya know, the slimebag who slept with her.) Okay, Sis! Vigilante shit.

Sophie gives Finley a pep talk after the incident, closing with, “She doesn’t know the Finley I know.” Leading Finley to kiss Sophie. Carrie walks in and is hilarious, per usual. I’m really appreciating her dry comedy lately.

Mama Carrie in the house!

Carrie gets bold, (Okay! Did not see this confidence coming but I like it!) and stands toe-to-toe against Finley’s mom. “I’ve been filling in in your absence,” Carrie says while dishing it to her for talking negatively about Fin. She keeps going — Mom just keeps spewing hate and insults and daggers until Tess accidentally drops the whole Turkey in Mom’s lap. Mama Carrie comes through to the finish saying, “Ya know what? I think it’s really time for you to go.” Carrie brings Finley in for a hug and coaches the rest of the table to join in and show Finley their love.

Carrie tells Finley how proud of her she is and Dani cheers, “To Finley: for bringing us all together.” The table finds out that Maribel and Micah have a donor and erupts into celebration.

The feel good can’t last — Carrie and Finley get back home and Carrie drops to the floor. The episode closes with Finley waiting on the phone with 911 for paramedics to arrive as she gives chest compressions to Carrie. All the while, a voiceover from Tess interjects the closing moments and it just seems like an assault to the lesbian series and poignant lesbian life moment that we are witnessing. A female voice would be more appropriate to mourn the losses and struggles that lesbian women, specifically, face.
