Stop doom scrolling for a second! I come bearing good news! Teen sensation JoJo Siwa came out! Welcome to the family, little sister.
What a way to come out! On her terms, in the most casual way possible. As though this was just another normal day she decided to share with her fans.
For those of us ancient fossils who don’t know, Siwa is a 17-year-old dancer, singer, actress, and YouTuber. She got her start as the youngest contestant in Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition. In 2017, she signed with Nickelodeon, and all us 90s kids know just how that network influenced our childhoods. To get a scope of her just how big she is, Time Magazine named her one of 2020’s most influential people in the world. What a resume for someone so young! She has also released several singles and had her first major concert tour in 2019. Her YouTube videos have amassed a whopping 3.4 billion views. Never mind the sheer volume of merch that her fans have bought, at one point outselling Star Wars merchandise. So you can see why this is a big deal. While many of us worry about the rampant homophobia she will no doubt face, she’s only focusing on the positive right now.
In coming out, she’s become a beacon of hope and representation to baby gays everywhere. She risks losing a chunk of her fan base because of homophobic parents, but that’s a small price to pay for the ability to wholeheartedly be yourself. Just look happy she is!
While she is not yet ready to tell us if she’s a lesbian or if she’s bisexual, that’s 100% okay. It takes a lot of emotional maturity to say what she said at her age. And for that we applaud you, young queen! Your lesbian and bisexual sisters got your back.
