Margo Price and Lucinda Williams in new collab “Change the Locks”

New year, new sapphic news. We have musical dramas, Sara Ramirez, new music, a beauty queen coming out of the closet, and a crisis averted when it comes to gay rights.

Sara Ramirez would go back to Grey’s Anatomy

The actor behind controversial Che Diaz on And Just Like That and Grey’s Anatomy favorite, Sara Ramirez, announced in an interview with Glamour that if the opportunity arose, Grey’s Anatomy could have Dr. Callie Torres back on the scene. “Absolutely,” Sara said, when asked what the answer would be if Sara was asked to return to Grey’s. “If the stars align in a way that makes it make sense, absolutely. I love my Grey’s Anatomy family.”

When asked what Callie would be doing right now, Sara said, “I imagine that Callie is in New York. I’m not really sure what else is going on for Dr. Callie Torres, but I’m just as curious as the fans are. I think it would be really exciting to see what Dr. Callie Torres is doing these days. So yeah, I’m definitely open to it. I would love to see it.”

Senegal stops draft bill that would toughen anti-gay law

Lawmakers of Senegal have rejected a super homophobic bill from passing, that would have made already strict laws on same-sex relationships even more tough.

“Gay sex is punishable by up to five years in prison in Senegal, where arrests and prosecutions have risen sharply,” according to Reuters. “But in December, a group of lawmakers drafted a new bill to lengthen prison terms to up to 10 years and criminalize LGBT+ activities specifically. The current law targets anyone who commits an “act against nature” with persons [of the same sex].”

While it’s crisis averted, more than what already is a crisis for gay and lesbian people in Senagal, nearby countries are considering more severe punishments. “Nearby Ghana is also considering an anti-LGBT+ law that would lengthen jail terms and force some to undergo “conversion therapy” intended to change a person’s sexual orientation.”

Margo Price and Lucinda Williams collab on “Change the Locks”

Lucinda Williams, who was inducted into the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame in October, 2021, has collaborated with Margo Price in new song “Change the Locks,” which Rolling Stone premiered on January 6th.

“Originally appearing on Williams’ self-titled 1988 LP, “Change the Locks” is the ultimate disappearing act and a commentary on a woefully busted relationship,” according to Rolling Stone.

Beth Ditto stars in musical drama Monarch

Monarch, the “multi-generational musical drama about America’s first family of country music,” premiers on Fox, January 30th. Besides lesbian legend of music Beth Ditto, Monarch casts Susan Sarandon, Anna Friel, and Trace Adkins.

“In MONARCH, the Romans are passionate and fiercely talented, but while their name is synonymous with honesty, the very foundation of this family’s success is a lie,” according to a press release.

“When dangerous truths bubble to the surface, the Romans’ reign as country royalty is put in jeopardy. Nicky Roman, the brilliant and fierce heir to the crown, already battling an industry and world stacked against her, will stop at nothing to protect her family’s legacy. It’s finally her turn. But is it too late?”

Editor’s Note: The premier of Monarch has been postponed until next season.

Miss Universe Australia comes out as bisexual

Former Miss Universe Australia, Maria Thattil, has come out as bisexual on an episode of the Australian version of the reality show, I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! The 28-year-old content creator, columnist and model was pushed to disclose her bisexuality when she was outed on a dating app.

“Growing up I always thought maybe a little bit bi-curious. And I’ve only ever dated straight people, but growing up I did have crushes on girls that I went to school with,” Thattil told fellow Celebrity contestant David Subritzky.

Maria took to Instagram to elaborate on the scene: “Conquering water pythons and coming out on national television? All in a days work. 👊🏽 Humour aside, I definitely felt a dissonance in the Jungle talking about @minus18youth but not being honest about my own sexuality. I’m grateful to @davidsubritzky and the Show for becoming a safe space for me.

“I’m grateful that I could model how to have a feared, big conversation in a gentle, simple way with no shame or stigma. I’m grateful for everyone who shared their own stories with me after last night and bloody proud of some who came out – on the spot – to family members after witnessing the convo.

What a humbling privilege it was to share and normalise what is such a personal and human experience. More of this. ❤️🌈”
