New Org Takes Aim at Homophobia and Medical Malpractice

Lesbians United, a new lesbian advocacy organization, launched earlier today. Organizations, that were once set up to protect lesbians, have deserted the lesbian community. Lesbians United aims to step in where the other groups have failed. The US based group aims to advocate “for the health and well-being of lesbians through public information campaigns that expose homophobia and malpractice in the medical establishment.”

The founder, who goes by T, is not using her name “out of concern that she and her partner may become targets for homophobic harassment.” When I ask about her own history, she explains how the internet played a major role in her view of herself. She says, “I went through a phase in my late teens and early twenties where I thought of myself as a man. I read too much Dan Savage, and fell down a rabbit hole.”

The organization states that, “Across the United States, doctors, psychiatrists, and surgeons are performing medical experiments on children who show early signs of homosexuality. Young lesbians in particular are being pushed to ‘transition’… In order to expose the inherent homophobia of so-called ‘child transition’ and ensure that the relevant facts are publicly available, Lesbians United launched our inaugural public information campaign, Understanding Child Transition, on February 1, 2022.”

“Lesbians United hopes to create and maintain lines of communication among lesbians in the U.S., with the goal of bringing the scattered lesbian community back together.”

The group programmer, who goes by C, was raised in a cult, and recognizes cult behavior when she sees it. She says, “In 2019, my employers, colleagues, and friends all began suggesting I was trans. Since then, I’ve been routinely singled out by managers, instructors, and random strangers. I’m tired of lesbians bearing the brunt of the collateral damage of this culture war…”

I talked to T about how the group plans to tackle issues which other organizations have ignored or made light of, such as the new minefield of pronouns lesbians are facing. Not only has it opened the door to daily doses of sexism and homophobia, but it’s especially no laughing matter when, for example, you’re in an emergency situation and a responder is using “they” to refer to your wife, one singular woman, and you’re dazed and confused, and desperately trying to figure out which group of people he’s referring to. Lesbians have been forced to bear the burden of pronoun Newspeak. T tells me, “One of our founding members’ coworkers, friends, and employers have started referring to her as ‘they’ without her permission.” She tells me about another lesbian friend“whose boss has required her, and only her, to put pronouns in her profile on the company website.”

“Formerly gay and lesbian organizations are now actively working against the rights of human dignity of lesbians.”

Lesbians United researcher, a self-described “butch lesbian” who goes by P, says, “In the 90s, we had a thriving community… We can have that again. It won’t be an easy battle, but Lesbians United is prepared to do the work.”

Through social media posts and colorful graphics, the organization “takes aim at the U.S. medical establishment and doctors who push young lesbians toward lifelong medicalization.” The group will be calling out pharmaceutical companies, gender clinics, and the American Psychiatric Association.

Over the next few months, Lesbians United plans to release campaigns that are focused on lesbian health, history, and community. An activism guide, articles, and exclusive online meet-ups, are also in the works. Stay tuned!
